Arrested and convicted of defying the governments order,he appealed his case all the way to the Supreme Court, but lost. Forty years later, attorney Dale Minami led the legal defense team when the case was reopened with new evidence of governmmental misconduct in the original case. Korematsus conviction was overturned,marking a pivotal moment in civil rights history. Minami has continued fighting for Asian Ameri-can rights for nearly four decades since. He was appointed by President Bill Clinton as Chair of the Civil Liberties Public Education Fund in 1996, co-founded the Asian Law Caucus and was the recipient ofthe American Bar Associations ABA Medal (the highest ABA award), Thurgood Marshall Award and the ACLUs Civil Liberties Award.Why did you decide to pursue a legal career?I majored in political science which was quite interesting but not easily translatable into marketable skills. My father, a practical man who probably didnt want to support his son forever, suggested that law might offer a foundation for occupations whichactually paid money, whether they were in law or in other fields. What a concept! I could continue an education without immediate-ly deciding on an occupation until forced to by economic necessity. So I chose law.
